TELLing the story, Learning from Listening
funded by Europe for Citizens programme
funded by Europe for Citizens programme
The Europe for Citizens Programme aims to raise the awareness of the younger generation about remembrance, shared history, and the values of the EU.
Project description
This project will aim to mobilize participants from 5 different EU countries (Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Greece and Poland) to ensure a diverse perspective on European historical experiences related to human rights and intolerances. The selection of these 5 countries will provide a rainbow of historical heritage and geographical equilibrium. From Central Europe to the Southern and Eastern borders; from EU funders to countries that were not yet part of the EU on 07/12/2000. Such a Pan-European involvement will ensure the cross-enrichment of national collective memories and the comprehensive portrayal of the EU's history related to fundamental rights and intolerances.
Many partners are active in small regional communities where citizens have fewer opportunities to partake in EU standard activities.

Project Aims and Objectives
As a result of recent socio-political events like Brexit, today many EU citizens criticizes the very Union itself for becoming an intangible idea. EU "achievements in terms of peace and stability in Europe [...] have not always led to a strong feeling among citizens of belonging to the EU" (Council Reg.390/2014). One of the main reasons for citizens maing such claims, especiallu younger generations, is that they are not fully aware of the Union's history, achievements and fundational principles , thus they take them for granted. TELL is focusing on the commemoration of the EU Charter of Human Rights as well as promoting the Human Library (HL) method to educate about intolerances and their effects with real witnesses, with real stories.
The HL method and the workshops on the gamification of teaching history will turn people into "living books". It means that "readers" can choose to "read a book" by giving their attention to a face-to-face discussion. As a result, the "readers" will feel enriched with a deepened remembrance of our history of (in)tolerance. This very inter-personal learning experience about EU values can help the audience to draw a lesson for the present, as it still has to deal with events of intolerance. Presenting contemporary democratic achievements, TELL's main objective is to foster a collective memory and a more profound feeling of belonging to the EU community.
The final conference will gather together policymakers, outh workers, teachers, witnesses from all over Europe under the aegis of sharing the project results and lessons learned and shaping together a network of non-forma methods for fostering EU remembrance.

Project Activities
The Human Library was chosen as the leading method for the project's activities to activate and sensitize young EU citizens to fundamental rights and tolerance. This noteworthy activity facilitates the effective way of engagement and the spreading of testimonies. With the tool of direct storytelling, HL will connect the two target groups: witnesses (the Books) and younger generations (the Readers). The readers have the opportunity to speak with direct/ indirect witnesses in a small group (1-3 people) just after choosing a Book from the catalogue. That will enable them to develop a sense of community and motivate them to create a more EU based integration on its core values.
Participants who play the role of the Books will share their experiences on other occasions too. They will also be involved in commemorative activities organized in each of the countries, including urban trekking (gamified guided visits associated with the 20th-century wars, intolerance and fundamental rights); creation of video books and dissemination events.
Due to its Pan-European partnership, TELL's 5 contributing countries will involve citizens from at least 10 EU countries. TELL will target the youths with a comprehensive range of events (debates, world cafés, historical urban trekking and guided visits, HL events) to reach diverse beneficiaries. All listed countries are expected to encourage people to TELL their stories and to create a cross-generational dialogue. It enjoys high importance since each of the countries communities has been profoundly touched by historical events exemplifying the violations of human rights and dignity- wars and totalitarian regimes of the 20th century- and have several living direct and indirect witnesses.
Immaterial oral testimonies will be preserved as video books. At the same time, the handbook will be a supportive source of efficient practices for teachers, youth workers and public bodies who want to use HL and other non-formal learning methods informal history and anti-discrimination education and will contain a summary of the Books and a link to the video version.
The final conference in Italy will promote cross-sectoral cooperation and create the foundations of a cross-sectoral European network. Such an achievement can provide further opportunities for developing innovative and creative methods of educating citizenship and filling the gap between formal and non-formal learning sectors.
The local dissemination events will help to encourage the local public and the stakeholders to expand their horizons on the field of history and human rights education on a national scale. Distributing innovative & creative methods and promoting intergenerational dialogue – an essential and demanding subject for anti-discrimination education- are key as we are struck by the excruciating disappearance of a generation of witnesses.
